Book cover

Forty-nine and single, fired from her lifelong passion of teaching music, and stripped of her self-worth, can Joanne reclaim her life through bicycle racing? Joanne Brick’s thirty years as an elementary school music teacher evaporate into the rising sea of layoffs. A lifetime of dedication gone. With an ailing mother and bitter divorced sister, the future looks bleak.

Then one day, while cleaning out the garage for a yard sale, Joanne dusts off an old long-forgotten bicycle. Never a sports fanatic and sorely out of shape, Joanne is barely able to ride straight, but she takes up bicycle racing because it adds purpose to her life. She pedals past unemployment, failed relationships, family drama, and career loss. As her life begins to fill with new friends; a hardened Desert Storm vet turned cycling coach, and a sleek new physique from all the training, she runs into a stone wall in the form of Sheila Dominary, a women’s bike racing adversary. In her struggle to achieve victory, Joanne discovers what is truly meaningful and what isn’t.

Louis Lowy

A former firefighter, Louis K. Lowy sometimes feels as if he jumped from the fire into the frying pan when he took up writing as a means to fulfill his passion to create characters and worlds that he longed to inhabit or longed to avoid. He also plays bass guitar, though not as frequently—something’s gotta give when you write.

Louis is the recipient of a State of Florida Individual Artist Fellowship. He is an alumnus of Florida International University’s creative writing program. His work has appeared in, among others, New Plains Review, The MacGuffin Magazine, The Chaffey Review, and the anthology, Everything Is Broken. His first published novel, Die Laughing, is a humorously dark sci-fi adventure set in the 1950's. His epic sci-fi drama, Anatomy of A Humachine (IFWG Publishing), is scheduled for release in mid-2016.

Books & Books is located at 265 Aragon Ave in Coral Gables, FL 33134.
